EXPERIENCE WHAT'S GOING ON AT PATTON FIRSTHAND!

Stay connected to life at Patton. Volunteering with the PTO is a great way to meet other parents, Patton staff, and also to see what's going on at Patton Middle School!

Volunteer Opportunities for 2016-17:

  • Vice President (A fun way to meet lots of people,  help out a great great school, and help improve the kids middle school experience. No experience necessary - Patton has two co-president to mentor you.)

  • Carnival Chair training (Jan-May) The carnival needs a few chairs to run our largest fundraiser of the year.  Take a year to learn the ropes and get trained this year to co-chair it the following year.

  • Talent Show (Mar/April) This show is student led and student ran. The talent show chair coordinates dates, practices, and is a figurehead to guide the kids.

There is something for everyone! Some events will need 2-3 Co-Chairs each! Grab a friend and volunteer together! To see the full list of committees and the descriptions click here. To learn more about these positions or getting involved in the PTO in general, contact Lynda Nadin at lynda.nadin@gmail.com

PennDOT Engineers Present to Patton Middle School Technology & Engineering Students

Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation took the time to share their experience and expertise with the students in Mr. Palo's Technology & Engineering class last Thursday. Civil Engineer/Project Manager Leanne Fullard and Civil Engineer/Bridge Inspector Kevin Sutow shared information about the bridges in our area and information about what it is like to be a civil engineer. One of the key topics of discussion was the "Pocopson Bridge" replacement project at the intersection of route 926 & Pocopson road which will affect these students and 13,000 citizens daily.  The information and time that they shared is greatly appreciated by the students. Here are just a few of the comments that the students shared after the presentation.

"Something that I found very interesting about the civil engineer's presentation was that there are about 22,000 bridges in PA."

"I found it very interesting that much testing was needed for a bridge inspection and data collection from scuba diving to the foundation to the hydraulic engineering needed for flood safety."

"What I found to be interesting from the civil engineer's presentation was that there are people like Mr. Sutow who goes under the bridges after being built and work on the technology of it."

This special visit directly ties to the structural engineering unit found in Patton's award winning Technology & Engineering program. Mr. Palo commented..."I was thrilled when PennDOT agreed to honor my request to come and share their expertise with our students, for a learning connection was made that they will remember for the rest of their lives." This is an example of the impacts that businesses and other entities can make if they take the time to team up with their local schools to create more "real world" S.T.E.M. connections.

FINAL BOX TOPS CHALLENGE REMINDER!

Wednesday, May 25, is the final day.

All Box Tops must be submitted at the Main Office by the end of the day! The winning advisory in each grade will be treated to an ice cream sundae party. Students from the overall winning advisory will receive special prizes...to be determined!

In 6th grade, Mrs. Jennings' advisory remains in 3rd place with 300. Mrs. Bunting's group is barely holding on to the 2nd spot with 303. And Mr. Baumgardner's advisory has jumped from 7th place to first with an even 400 Box Tops.

The top three places in 7th grade have not changed, but the gap between 1st and 2nd place is decreasing rapidly. Mrs. Lear's advisory remains in 3rd place with 456. Mr. O'Rourke's students have submitted 683 to maintain 2nd place. And Mrs. Palic still leads with 731 Box Tops.

For the 8th grade, Mrs. Remphrey's advisory has moved into 3rd place with 200 Box Tops, barely trailing Mr. Cippolini's 207. Mrs. Basilio's advisory is the leader heading into the final weeks with 367 Box Tops.

Remember...the deadline is Wednesday, May 25. The winner will be announced after Memorial Day. Friendly reminder to separate the Box Tops into groups of 50 if possible and, most importantly, write the advisory teacher's name on the envelope or plastic bag!  Thank you!
